- Almondbury Library Friends Association (ALFA) was formed in February 2015 when it became clear that Kirklees Council were facing major funding reductions to the library service, which would affect our local library and the building it occupies.
- In October the Council decided that the "village libraries", of which Almondbury is one, would have their staffing reduced, and would only stay open if local Friends' Associations helped to provide volunteer support for the professional staff. In the case of Almondbury, this means that eventually there will only be one professional member of staff in the library, providing 15 hours of coverage. At the very minimum, we shall have to match those hours with volunteer staff.
- The initial focus of ALFA, therefore, is to recruit volunteers from the local area who can assist with a range of tasks to allow the library to continue to function for the benefit of our community.
- In parallel with this, it is the Council's wish to transfer ownership of the building to Community ownership, where they can be satisfied that a number of social and financial criteria can be met.ALFA decided at its meeting on 31st October that it would seek to acquire the building and develop its use as a Community resource. To enable the financial criteria to be met, this will involve developing regular fund-raising and financial support to cover the running costs of the building. ALFA also intend to create a charitable Community Incorporated Organisation (CIO) to take over ownership of the building from the Council.
